β-hemihydrate gypsum can be obtained by calcining dihydrate gypsum under normal pressure, while α-hemihydrate gypsum (also known as high-strength gypsum)is formed by dehydration crystallization under closed and pressurized conditions.
The industrial production processes of α -gypsum mainly include autoclave and pressurized aqueous solution methods. These two methods involve high investment, high production costs, unstable product quality, and do not meet the requirements of energy conservation, environmental protection, efficiency and competition under the new situation.
To address the challenges of high cost and low efficiency of traditional methods and to promote high-quality development of the entire gypsum industry, Hubei Zhengxianda Environmental Protection Technology Co., Ltd. and Hubei Zhimeitang Gypsum New Technology Co., Ltd. jointly developed the “α gypsum crystal Autoclave growth transcrystal technology” (SGT method for short). The SGT process is simple, the product quality is stable, the investment cost is low, the operating cost is low, and it has significant advantages over traditional α -gypsum preparation methods.
The α -hemihydrate gypsum crystals produced by the SGT method are coarse, short columnar, and well-defined (see Figure 1). The cementitious hardened body has high strength, with 2-hour flexural and drying compressive strength reaching the α40 strength grade in the building materials industry standard JC/T 2038-2010 (technical parameters are shown in Table 1).

The key transcrystal technology for the SGT process was completed at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, with Zhimeitang responsible for process, testing and application, and Zhengxianda responsible for equipment manufacturing and quality control. The first 20,000-ton α gypsum production line has been officially put into operation in Jingmen.
The development of high-strength α -type gypsum technology is very rapid, and the SGT method will further change the industry landscape and inject new vitality into the high-quality development of building decoration base materials.
